Date Night Is Not Optional

By Kristin C. Harad, CFP®

At my workshops, I always talk about the Biggest Mistake Parents Make with their Money: failing to invest in your relationship. This means making Date Night a non-negotiable part of your intentional spending plan. How? Decide how much you want to spend on Date Night each month and set those funds aside (in their own account if you need to!). It does not have to be an elaborate outing -- get a sitter for an evening of a bookstore trip and dessert together. Just carve out time for you!

Last Saturday night, my husband and I had one of our date nights for the month. We usually go out to dinner, but this time we decided that a movie was the way to go. As you may guess, we saw Date Night . Now, I realize that movie reviews may be outside the normal scope of financial planning wisdom, but I wanted to share my review just because I enjoyed my evening so much.

No, this film is not ready for Cannes -- but, it WILL make you smile! As a former NYC-dweller, the distracted too-good-for-you restaurant hosts cracked me up. As a mother, I actually laughed out loud when Tina Fey went on her rant about the kids and their pajamas. And, I couldn't help but snicker when they are running through Central Park, fearful they will be killed, and Tina Fey yells that she does not want her mother-in-law to be the kids' guardian! (I know my estate planning attorney Thea Eliot appreciated that part too!)

So, if you want to just relax into a movie with a ridiculous caper and a humorous take on parenthood, treat yourself with those funds you've set aside....grab some popcorn too!
